Research interests

I study late Byzantine intellectual history with a special emphasis on Byzantine historical writing and rhetoric. My doctoral dissertation focused on the fifteenth-century historian Laonikos Chalkokondyles and the revival of Herodotus in the circle associated with the neoplatonist philosopher George Gemistos Pletho in Mistra. I am also interested in the various ways in which late Byzantine intellectuals contributed to the Renaissance and responded to the rise of the Ottomans.
