During this three-day summer seminar, participants will learn how to analyze aspects of the physical book to determine its make-up and manufacture, and how to present their findings in a systematic way. Basic elements of the discipline, including title-page quasi-facsimile transcription, format, collation, and pagination, and the identification of paper and typography will be introduced, as will a discussion of the concepts of edition, issue, and state. The seminar will be mixture of introductory lectures followed by hands-on practice sessions using hand and machine-printed books from the rich resources of the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library. The seminar will take place between June 4-6, 2018.
