The canon of texts subjected to scholarly scrutiny is growing and becoming more diverse. This creates new challenges. Controversy has always been at the heart of textual studies, textual editing and approaches to the history of the book. This is particularly true at the present time, when new large-scale critical editions are under way, employing different methodologies and producing a diverse range of outputs. Decisions about copy-text and annotation, principles of selection and emendation remain current.
