This international conference, organized by Ute Schneider (Mainz) and Daniel Bellingradt (Erlangen-Nuremberg), will reflect on "used books" and their trade. We aim to stimulate the discussion on the theoretical perspectives and characteristics of "used books" by addressing neglected aspects of dealing with various forms of "used" written media from early modern to modern times. For example, while the historiography of the modern German antiquarian book trade is flourishing, other forms of trading second-hand books have been neglected so far. The spectrum of the conference ranges from the early modern period to the present day. Business models in today's online commerce will also be taken into account. The understanding and treatment of the cultural asset "book" is currently undergoing a transition: the private resale of books - contrary to traditional storage practices - is now much more common.
